❓ Frequently Asked Questions
An exponent tells you how many times to multiply a base by itself. In 2⁸, the base is 2 and the exponent is 8, meaning 2×2×2×2×2×2×2×2 = 256. Exponents are also called powers or indices.
A negative exponent means the reciprocal. For example, 3⁻² = 1/3² = 1/9 = 0.111... Any base raised to a negative exponent equals 1 divided by that base raised to the positive exponent.
A fractional exponent represents a root. b^(1/2) = √b, b^(1/3) = ∛b. More generally, b^(p/q) = the q-th root of bᵖ. For example, 8^(2/3) = ∛(8²) = ∛64 = 4.
